Hello, hello, and welcome back! I have been completely consumed by working on the geode baby blanket and not much else happened during May so let’s hop in!
WiPs
I have 2 WiPs at the moment. The Cyclone Hat by MyGurumi and the White Lily Blanket by Elena Fedotova.
The Cyclone Hat by MyGurumi, I mentioned last time, is a fun beanie with a twist (pun intended). The pattern itself isn’t available on Ravelry anymore but thanks to some helpful comments on the page linked above, someone was able to find a WayBackMachine version of it. I’m using RMR Yarn Co’s Rocio base in the OOAK and Por Ocho colorways. This has proven to be a nice mindless knit to work on as I watch TV or my husband play video games. But I was a little too mindless and there is one stitch that I messed up quite a ways back. I know it would never be noticeable but I’m still contemplating laddering back to fix it. Other than that this has been a fun one but not one that has been pulling me in so I made pretty little progress.
The second WiP is what I’m calling the Geode Blanket. I’m using the White Lily Blanket pattern by Elena Fedotova I mentioned last month with a few tweaks. Instead of being a symmetrical square type shape the original pattern makes I’m going for more of a teardrop. To plan out the color changes I created a grid in GIMP a free image manipulation program and then filled in each triangle trying to recreate the geode. I’m about 70 hours into this one. 20 of those was redoing work I had already done. 😦 I was working and joining each triangle as I worked. I believe the pattern says to join work by going into the back loop only of the triangle you are joining too but I didn’t like how it looked. So instead I was joining going under both the front and back loop. For the single color it looked great but as I got to the second color the joins meant the chain top of the dark blue was coming to the medium blue side and vice versa. At first I was just going with it and convinced myself it would be fine. But as I was halfway through the light blue color I decided I didn’t like it after all. I ended up taking all of the triangles apart and trying a few different joining methods. I settled on {yarn over (loop 2), insert hook in 3rd loop of triangle I’m joining to (loop 3), insert hook through stitch on triangle I’m working on, yarn over, pull up a loop (loop 4), yarn over (loop 5), pull through loops 4 and 2 (3 loops remain), yarn over (loop 6), pull through loops 5, 3, and 1 (finished stitch)}. Not sure if that makes sense but I’ll try to add some photos or a video here of the process. With this new method the colors stay on their respective sides (for the most part) and I think it looks a lot cleaner. Now that I’m back on track (after a 20 hour detour) progress is going great and I’m hoping to finish it up this month!
FOs
Randomly this month I decided I wanted to work on something quick. I scrolled through Ravelry looking for a quick free pattern and landed on the Free For All Cowl by Jen Peck. It’s a cute cowl with a 10 row repeat that was pretty quick to memorize. I used 2 yarns for this both are made from bunny but I can’t find the yarn tags. I got them during the Hill Country Yarn Crawl in Texas 2 years ago. Since they’re different colors they gave a cool striping effect. Still haven’t blocked it I’ll have to wit till I find those labels to make sure I don’t accidentally shrink them. I’ll take better photos once it’s done done.
Frogs
No frogs this month! Other than the blanket mentioned above. Not bad but there is still a pile of things waiting to be frogged in my craft room closet.
Loose Ends
I’ve been listening to a few yarn podcasts; Keep Calm and Carry Yarn, Pardon My Stash, and Unraveling. While listening I think Unraveling mentioned county fairs. I had never thought about entering things I’ve made in a fair before listening to them talk about their experience. So I think this year I’ll enter a few of the things I’ve made into the county fair! The fair here won’t be till July but something interesting I hadn’t thought of before. I think when I was in 3rd grade our teacher had an art project that she entered each of our creations into. I vaguely remember making a Flintstones looking bird house but that’s my only recollection of being involved with a county fair.
Closing
Thanks for stopping in! Let me know if you’ve ever entered anything into a fair! I’d love to hear your stories.
